written by Roxanne Peterson

With the world going high on technology, marketing has become a key player in the world of business. One spends a fortune of marketing gimmicks to ensure prosperity in business and these costs also includes graphics design like logos and tag lines. A company is known by its logo first and therefore special care should be given to its design to ensure its relevance and uniqueness. A logo symbolizes the enterprise and adds a new aspect in its identity and popularity.

A logo design comprises of capturing the theme of the company in a simple form comprising of a design involving some alphabets and graphics. The logo generally comprises of short names or initials that would aptly represent the company and at the same time become synonymous with the company at a glance. The effort that goes behind getting that perfect logo and the associated tagline that would perfectly suit it and describe the company is magnanimous. From a creative team discussing and trying out various layouts to brain wrecking and constant creative influences, logo designing is an uphill task.

The Font Usage and How It Affects the Logo Design

The font should be dependent on factors like how formal the logo wants to be or how casualistic an approach it takes. One can go for stylish fonts like Bradley Hand ITC to give an idea of style and elegance to the viewer or a more sophisticated font like Times new roman that is used in most company logos can be adopted. The font size also plays an important role in the determination of the importance that is due for a particular word, as it can enhance that specific word or highlight its importance in the sentence. Using a variety of fonts for a particular campaign never works, and therefore one must always stick to a particular font type to depict all the information necessary for it.

Icons and Its Symbolic Interpretation

The symbols that are used for the depiction of the name of the company should be closely associated with it. In most cases it is the symbolic interpretation that works for the graphic designers while creating a logo. In some cases pictures or icons depicting animals which symbolizes strength, courage and other similar qualities are used which implies that the company possesses these qualities and delivers the desired product with sincerity. At other times symbols or structures like a circle or a triangle can enhance the way a logo looks and depicts an inner meaning like unity in the form of a circle etc. Other symbols that can also be used are globe to represent the services of the company that has a global reach. For some companies the logo icon can also be something related to their product like the picture of books for a bookstore etc.

Colors That Speak

Colors have an appeal of their own and add to the charm of the logos. They make the logo colorful and at the same time represent other features that can be depicted in the form of colors. Colors like blue, black, brown have a formal tone to it and add a sense of seriousness and depth to the logo. Other dimensions of color are the hidden meaning they carry, for example the color red symbolizes creativity and bold taste, whereas blue represents trust and comfort. Going green with the logo can represent the company’s interest in the eco friendly attitude. Splash of colors to add that extra bright touch of vibrancy is an important aspect of graphics designing for logos, but one needs to make sure that it goes well with the theme of the logo as well as the approach. One might also take caution not to include an array of colors for the logo to keep it simple yet attractive.

Tagline

Words are an amazing tool to reach out to the world at large, and taglines can work wonders for the publicity of the company. A tagline should be smart, should be expressing the motive or the importance of the company and at the same time be crisp and short. A tagline has the capability to become popular like a wild fire and give new edge to the entire logo. A few words or even a broken sentence can become the tagline that can represent a company’s profile across the world. It can also be a little on the philosophical side or in direct promotion of the company.

Great article Roxanne. I often find font logos work stronger than symbol logos but Apple here is a great example when the symbol becomes much bigger than the written logo itself. I think the more simple and clean the logo design is the better. Thank you. Martin
