Dark and Emotive Portrait Photography

written by Jared Thompson

Inspiration comes in various forms, ways and means. Photography is something which captures a moment in time, a snapshot of the world in which we all live in.
Here I am taking portrait and personal photography as a means of inspiration, using the human expression based around dark and emotive portraits as the subject matter.
This showcase of photographs all the pictures are that of a portrait style taken from many different photographers, from across the web.

Totally diggin the mood you managed to evoke here Jared :) I always prefer a Noir effect within photography . Good to see a roundup of images not overly done in PS :P Great roundup J- as always !

yeah good to see just clean photography sometimes, not always great to see over photoshopped photos.

Great collection! I completely agree that it is nice to see a grouping of shots with less post-processing.

The tone and color of the second one (purple), blows me away…

Great Work, Jared. The second image is just sublime :)

There is a small Photoshop shortcut to achieve this type of emotive effect. If you meddle with the Highlights/Shadows a bit followed by passing the image through a High Pass Filter, finally brightening up light areas using a Dodge tool will get exactly similar kind of effects.

Maybe you can experiment with it a bit and create a new tutorial ;) Just a small suggestion

    Good work with the collection.
