Take Monotony Off The Roads
written by Nikola LazarevicWe all know that in the U.S.A. access to a car symbolizes freedom; but once on the streets, a huge quantity of obligations and written informations suddenly appear along the road. Often, many complex signs and directions are given in text to the driver’s eye and brain.
Have you ever tried to drive in the U.S. ? You will figure out quickly that in this country the road-system – in opposition with other country’s road signs which are more based on a pictographic expression – is extremely wordy. Curiously some of those instructions are kind of long to read for a normal driving tempo and one have to understand the language in order to be able to circulate.
Depending of how one feel inside while driving, those instructions may let place to rather mysterious, romantic or even poetic messages. Studio AND originally from Switzerland – now relocated in San Francisco – have recreated with humor and in a dyslexic process a series of slightly transformed road-signs, by simply taking away or replacing one or two letters of the original version. The result of this stylistic re-composition is a series of surreal signs which make the road way more interesting than they are in the real life.
Some of those signs are to be found in black and white in the font “Signal Signifier” .

In addition, “Innerstate” – which is the name of the series – is now to wear at CafePress, the online printing on demand website. All those signs have been applied at Studio AND. Various visual artifact such as jackets, buttons, magnets, greeting- or postcards, T-shirt and much more are in circulation and now one can wear his “No Barking Any Time-Jacket” with his “Exist-Baselball Cap” while driving, holding his “My Way-Coffee Mug” after having trow away his “Anger” pillow.

To wear responsibly…
