The 2010 Winter Olympic Games will begin today on February 12th in Vancouver, Canada. I thought it would be interesting to see how the design trends in Olympic posters have changed during the years.
In this article you will find every official poster from the winter Olympic games from 1924 to 2010.

  • Excellent job, Nik. Its so fascinating to see how ‘Design’ has evolved since the 20’s. I like the ‘Grenoble’ and the ‘Turin’ ones the most.

    Thanks for collecting this.

  • Great list. My favorite poster is not in that list. It is the one created by the Peta to illustrate the murder of seals by canada: http://www.cvfaf.org/files/SealHuntVanc2010.jpg

    Jean-Baptiste Jung
    • That’s right, Jean. I was spoken about this peta work and logo in one of my blogs last year.

I love the games, I do not love doping, but it is very sad, that the sealing in canada was only a big headline last year in my country.

The IOC is given some rules and warnings to the athlets and to the print media. But at least the countries and towns for olympic games will bring the world together, that’s true. But in first of all the games will bring the dollars to the right lobby.

I love the idea of olympic, that’s the reason why my favorite posters are these good old vintage things.

  • Love your posts! This one is great–Dugg and also retweeted! Oops–check the spelling in title–”Olympic” is the correct spelling

  • Innsbruck, Austria 1964
This poster has a very dark mood to it. Wilhelm Jaruska designed this poster for a invite only design competition. A few years leading up to the games several key international atheletes were killed;including the entire US figure skating team and family members. The were killed involved with a flight Sabena 548 in Brussels, Germany. The flight was in route to 1961 World Championships. I was wondering if this may have impacted the mood of the poster?

  • Nice post! I like Grenoble Poster and Vancouver (logo only though)

Just wanted to make sure you knew.

  • Awesome collection. I really liked their theme for this year’s Winter Olympics. Whoever the design agency was did an excellent job. I remember tweeting about it, and it’s sad that he just recently died, the man responsible for that design. Anyway, his legacy will continue to live on through his design.

  • I like the 1992 and this year’s Olympic design the best. Thanks for compiling and sharing these posters.

  • My favourite is Oslo 1952!
It’s very interesting seeing the progression!

    Rikka
  • Very nice collection. Vancouver poster is really nice!

    Ogvidius
  • Nice set of posters but are you aware that you’ve spelt Olympic incorrectly in two places – as “Olypmic”

    Simon Goss
  • My fave is the 1924 poster for Chamonix. I think the design quality went downhill (pun intended) starting in the 60s, with but a few exceptions (1998 and 2010).

    Lenora
  • Great collection guys, really like the Vancouver one.

  • Love Chamonix, St Moritz 1948 and Nagano. My wife says Nagano, 1998, would comfortably sit on our walls. Lillehammer – I don’t think so.

    Peter
  • great post, thanks

  • grenoble 1968 is a clear and artistic design, all others are very inspiring ,thanks for the author

  • The best is Innsbruck in 1964, actualy and beatiful.

    Louish
  • Nice work!
but there’s something I don’t understood. the winter games, as the olympics, are each 4/4years… so why after the games of 92 there’s a poster of 94 games?

    Sandroka
    • Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Here’s the answer on your question:

“The Winter and Summer Games resumed in 1948 and were celebrated on the same year until 1992. At that time the Winter Games split from the Summer Games, and were begun to be celebrated on alternating even years. The first Winter Olympic Games to be held on this new schedule was in 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway.”

  • Last one is the best imho :) Man, i’m surprised with Innsbruck 1964’s posteri was there a grunge trend at those days??

    Akin G.
  • As far as the posters themselves go, I like Grenoble 1968 and Tourino 2006 the best.

However, as far as overall design themes go, I loved the treatment for the Lillehammer games and the feel of the graphics. They did a great job echoing that theme in everything related to those games too.

    Susan
  • Squaw Valley 1960 and Salt Lake City 2002 so ugly…

    Andrés
  • There is so much hope in the 1948 St. Moritz poster; obviously just coming off WWII. Grenoble 1968 is nice as well.

  • ME GUSTA NAGANO 1998 Y VANCOUVER 2010. ADORO LOS TONOS AZULES Y VERDADERAMENTE AGRADEZCO QUE LOS COMPARTAN PARA TODOS LOS QUE NOS INTERESAMOS EN LOS CAMBIOS SIGNIFICATIVOS DEL DISEÑO.

  • Wow, it’s amazing how the graphic design has evolved, it depends also in where the games were going to be at.

  • Great set, my favs are oslo 1952, Innsbruck 1976 and Nagano 1998, I like them because its simplicity, its flawless.
