Combine stock photos and design resources to create an awesome retro futuristic poster. By mixing up bright and vibrant cosmic designs with old, distressed and grungey textures we’ll create a print-ready retro futuristic poster design for “Yugoslav Airlines”, the former national carrier of Yugoslavia.

Follow this step-by-step tutorial and learn how a range of Photoshop techniques pull together the various elements to create the final design.

First let’s take a sneak peak at what we’ll be creating. Looks awesome isn’t it?!

Step 1

Fire up Adobe Photoshop and create a document with your desired poster dimensions (I used standard A3 paper size) and fill background with white color. Remember to use a high DPI (between 150-300 dpi) and CMYK Color Mode if you are planning on sending your work to the press.

Step 2

To start, create new group (Layer > New > New Group), give it appropriate name like “poster”, then with Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) draw a rectangle that is a bit smaller then canvas (give it 5mm on each side). Make sure that group layer is selected and go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection to apply layer mask.

Download and open Handmade Paper, Desaturate the image (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + U) to remove its colors and import into our design. Using Free Transfrom Tool (Cmd/Ctrl + T) resize image a bit and place it inside our “poster” group and set the Opacity to 40%.

Create another group – “main” (inside “poster” group), just above Handmade Paper layer, and with Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) create selection. Use image below as reference.

Select “main” group and apply Layer Mask (Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection).

Step 3

Download and import the Capodimonte Deep Field and place it inside “main” group. You can play with the size of this layer if you want.

Adjust Hue/Saturation (Cmd/Ctrl + U) to drop down colors.

Create a new layer. For Foreground Color choose a low-saturated pink color (#eebbfb) and with Brush Tool (B), with a large, soft brush tip to create a spot; apply the Gaussian Blur filter on this layer (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) with Radius of 130px. Then just set the Opacity of this layer to 40% to soften and blend the effect into its background.

Create another new layer (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + N), choose green color (#2cbe7e), and with Brush Tool and large soft brush dub one more spot but this time in the upper part of canvas. Apply Gaussian Blur (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) with Radius set to 150px,

change the Blend Mode to Screen and

set Opacity of this layer to 15%.

Download the Earth image and then open it in Photoshop. With the Elliptical Marquee Tool (M), make a selection around earth, copy it (Cmd/Ctrl + C) and then paste it (Cmd/Ctrl + V) into our design. Use following images as a reference.

Duplicate Earth layer (Cmd/Ctrl + J) and apply following layer styles and set the Blend Mode to Multiply.

Cmd/Ctrl + click on the thumbnail of earth layer to put a selection around it. Create a new layer and, on this new layer, fill the selection with black. Move the black circle towards the right an down, leaving just a portion of earth visible.

Apply the Gaussian Blur filter with Radius at 100px on the black circle layer and lower the Opacity to 85%. You can see that this technique gives our earth a nice shading effect.

Step 4

Open Picture of the Boeing 727-2H9/Adv aircraft in Photoshop, cut out the plane from background using Pen Tool (P) and import onto our canvas. Using Free Transform Tool (Cmd/Ctrl + T) resize, rotate and adjust perspective of the plane, similar to the image below.

Adjust Hue/Saturation (Cmd/Ctrl + U),

duplicate the plane layer, change the Blend Mode to Multiply and Opacity to 70%,

add Gradient Map adjustment layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map), and apply only to plane copy layer (Layer > Create Clipping Mask). Lower the Opacity of Gradient Map adjustment layer to 60%.

Create new document in Photoshop with exact size like our design. Fill the Background with black color then go to Filter > Render > Lens Flare.

Import this layer into our design, change the Blend Mode to Screen and Opacity to 90%, rotate a bit so the diagonal lines are following the orientation of the plane and resize it to cover the whole size of “main” group.

It’s time to add a cool typographic title. Lay out the title of the piece in a cool font such as Futura Condensed Medium with a large 200% tracking.

Duplicate the layer and add a 2px Gaussian blur after rasterizing the text.

Download and install the Grunge Photo Edge brush library. Set the Foreground color to #c6bebb. Create a new layer on top and use a brush from the Grunge Photo Edge brush library to roughen up the poster borders. Play around with the brush size and other brush settings to achieve a great effect.

Finish off the design with some typical brending (boeing and yugoslav airlines logos).

Step 1

Open up your chosen image in Photoshop. Here I’ve picked out a nice Pylons near wheat field shot from DepositPhotos.

Make small Levels adjustments to increase the contrast slightly.

If you are planning to use your work for poster printing, use a high DPI (between 150-300dpi) and CMYK Color Mode.

Step 2

Add Curves Adjustment Layer (go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves) and change the drop down menu to select the Red channel and make adjustments.

Change the drop down to the Green channel and make adjustments to the tones controlled by this channel,

and finally adjust the Blue channel.

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map to add an adjustment layer above all the other layers. Create a gradient going from #270052 to #e78f05, set the Blend Mode to Soft Light, and lower the Opacity of the adjustment layer to 60%.

Step 3

Press Cmd/Ctrl + A to select all, then go to Edit > Copy Merged and then paste this duplicate on a new layer (Edit > Paste). Apply Gaussian Blur.

Add a Layer Mask to the blur layer and with large soft brush erase blurring, leaving spots of blurring only on the edges of the photo. This will give nice depth to our photo.

Create new layer (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + N) and with large soft brush dub couple of red spots (#af2100).

Change the Blend Mode to Linear Dodge (Add) and Opacity to 50%.

Step 4

In this step we are going to add vignette. Cmd/Ctrl+A to select all, create new layer, then go to Edit > Stroke to add a 100px black stroke inside the document.

Apply Gaussian Blur with maximum Radius of 250px,

and lower the Opacity to 20%.

With soft white brush dub a large spot and change Blend Mode to Soft Light.

Add Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and adjust Hue and Saturation to get faded colors look.

Step 5

Using Ellipse Tool (U) create red circle (#731f0b) and set Blend Mode to Multiply and Opacity to 50%.

Duplicate this layer twice (Cmd/Ctrl + J), move duplicated layers below the original circle layer, and then move duplicated circles one to the right and up a bit, and other to the left and down a bit.

Step 6

Create new document using 10 pixels for the width and 10 pixels for the height, with transparent background. Set the Foreground color to #000000 and with Line Tool (U) draw diagonal line.

Go to Edit -> Define Pattern. Name the new pattern the way you want it, and you will have a very cool diagonal pattern.

Back to our design. It’s time to add some text to our design. Download and install League Gothic font in case you don’t have it already and add text.

Open the Layer Style dialog window by double-clicking on the layer, set Fill to 0%, add Pattern Overlay effect using the pattern we created and set Opacity to 85%.

Duplicate text layer and set the Blend Mode to Multiply.

Next duplicate layer again and lower the Opacity to 75%.

Again duplicate our last duplicated layer, lower the Opacity to 55%, and using arrow keys on keyboard move this layer down and left a bit.

Finally duplicate last layer, move it to the right and up few pixels (use arrow keys) and set Opacity of this layer to 35%.

Step 7

This is the last step in the tutorial. We will use texture to give our entire composition the grunge look we are going for.

Import Film Texture into design and resize it fit our canvas,

then set Blend Mode to Soft Light and Opacity to 45%.

Follow this step by step process of designing a timeless swiss style poster design for the imaginary ambient music festival “Bella Musica”, which was held on Ibiza in July 1978. The design process involves turning digital photos into imperfect analog photos with light leaks, dark vignettes and blurred focus, creating patterns, mixing images, textures and blend modes to achive the final design.

“Bella Musica” poster design is directly inspired by the works of Swiss designer Josef Muller-Brockmann.

Step 1: Turn Digital Photo into Old Style Analog Photo

First things first – we have to turn our perfect digital photo into old style analog photo with imperfections. Colour washes of warm tones, dark vignettes surrounding the shots, blurred focus and light leaks where the film has been excessively exposed, were all common problems that appeared during the processing of film.
Let’s recreate all those characteristics. Open Ibiza photo (or any other photo of your choice) in Photoshop.

Add Curves Adjustment Layer (go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves) to the photo.

From the drop down menu choose the Green Channel and adjust the curve.

Next move to the Blue Channel and adjust the curve using image below as a reference.

Create new layer (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + N) above Curves Adjustment Layer and fill it with #ff00e4 color. Change the Blend Mode to Soft Light and set the Opacity to 20%.

Press Cmd/Ctrl + A to select all, then go to Edit > Copy Merged and then paste this duplicate on a new layer (Edit > Paste). Apply Gaussian Blur to this layer.

Add a Layer Mask to the blur layer and with large soft brush erase blurring, leaving spots of blurring only on the edges of the photo.

Create another new layer on top, and with large soft brush dub a few red spots (#b81119) to create light leaks.

Change Blend Mode of this layer to Linear Dodge (Add) and lower the Opacity to 70%.

It’s time to create vignette. Cmd/Ctrl+A to select all, create new layer, then go to Edit > Stroke to add a 100px black stroke inside the document.

Apply Gaussian Blur with maximum Radius of 250px to stroke layer,

and change the Blend Mode to Soft Light and Opacity to 70%.

With large white brush dub a spot,

and change Blend Mode to Soft Light.

Finally we need to add grain structure to the photo.

Create new layer and fill it with black color. Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise and add some noise.

Set the Blend Mode to Screen and Opacity to 15%.

Voila! We have perfect/imperfect analog photo!

We can now proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Setting Up the Poster Canvas

Create a document (File > New) with your desired poster dimensions. Because I’m only designing for screen, I’ll use an document sized at 1296x1728px, set to RGB at 72dpi. If your work will be printed, you’ll need a much higher resolution-at least 300dpi. You’ll also need to set up bleeds and margins. Set your background color to a #f9f4de.

Create new layer, then with Rectangluar Marquee Tool (M) create selection and fill it with #aac9c1.

Step 3: Add Analog Photo to Design

Import photo we prepared onto design.

Using Elliptical Marquee Tool (M) create selection like shown on the image below,

and apply Layer Mask (Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection).

Cmd/Ctrl + click on Layer Mask Thumbnail to make selection, grab Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), make sure “Intersect with selection” is selected, and draw rectangle around bottom half of circle. The result will be selection around bottom half of the photo.

Create new layer and fill the selection with #aac9c1 and set the Blend Mode to Multiply.

Repeat the same process for the upper half of the photo but this time use #f9f4de color.

I like to keep layers organized, so I will advice you to select photo layer and both color layers (upper and bottom half of the photo) and group them (Cmd/Ctrl + G) into one group (name this group “photo”).

Step 4: Create Circles Around Photo

First create new layer below “photo” group. Cmd/Ctrl + click on photo Layer Mask Thumbnail to make selection, then go to Select > Modify > Expand to expand selection by 10px.

Fill the selection with #d2632b color.

Create new layer below orange circle layer, Cmd/Ctrl + click on orange circle layer thumbnail to create selection and then expand selection by 10px. Fill this layer with #ce8125 color.

Repeat the above process to create another circle (position below first 2 circles). Fill this circle with #dfa329.

Finally add one more circle (below first 3 circles) filled with #d2c09a color.

Select all circles, group them, and set the group Opacity to 30%.

Step 5: Create and Add Pattern

Create new document using 10 pixels for the width and 10 pixels for the height, with transparent background. Set the Foreground color to #060400 and using Rectangle Tool (U) draw small rectangle.

Go to Edit -> Define Pattern. Name the new pattern the way you want it.

Back to our design, add a layer below last circle, with Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) create rectangle and fill with any color.

Open the Layer Style dialog window by double-clicking on the layer. Add Pattern Overlay effect, using the pattern we created,

and set Fill of this layer to 0%.

I didn’t want to have pattern over the circles so I did the following: Cmd/Ctrl + click on bottom circle layer thumbnail, make sure that the layer with pattern is selected and then apply layer mask to this layer (Layer > Layer Mask > Hide Selection).

Step 6: Add Event Title and Description

Pick up Horizontal Type Tool (T), for the font choose Helvetica, and add event title.

Next, we need to add some info about the event at the bottom of the poster.

Step 7: Final Touches

Set the Foreground color to #aac9c1 and with Ellipse Tool (U) create circle (hold Alt + Shift to create perfect circle).

Change the Blend Mode to Multiply.

Duplicate this layer (Cmd/Ctrl +J) three times and position the circles like shown on the image below.

Import free sample texture from wegraphics Folded and Scratched Paper Textures Part I pack onto our design, resize it a bit (make it smaller and keep torn part outside) and run sharpen filter (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen).

Set the Blend Mode to Screen and Opacity to around 20%.

One more thing left to do – we need border around our design. Cmd/Ctrl + A to select all, create new layer on top of all layers, go to Edit > Stroke and give our design 20px white stroke.

Step 1: Create Photoshop Document

Fire up Photoshop and create a document with your desired poster dimensions (File > New) and choose white for the background color. If you are planning to send your work to the printing press, use a high DPI (between 150-300dpi) and CMYK Color Mode.

For this tutorial, I created a document sized at 800x1135px, RGB Color at 72dpi (for web use).

Add 2 Vertical Guides (View -> New Guide) at 15px and 785px.

Step 2: Add Mountain

Download Matterhorn 1 photo from stock.xchng and import it onto design (use image below as refference).

Select photo and press Cmd/Ctrl + U to open the Hue/Saturation window. Check “colorize” and enter the following settings:

Add one more guide (View -> New Guide), but this time Horizontal at 878px. With Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) make selection,

then go to Layer -> Layer Mask -> Reveal Selection to apply layer mask.

Step 3: Add Text

Pick up Horizontal Type Tool (T), for the font choose Helvetica, and type “MATTERHORN”.

Lower the Opacity of text layer to 60%.

As you can see it’s a bit hard to read the text, so we’re going to fix that.
Create new layer (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + N) below text layer,

Cmd/Ctrl + click on image layer mask to make selection (this way operation will only be applied to selection not the whole canvas),

set the Foreground color to #204660, choose the Gradient Tool (G) and select the Foreground to Transparent preset in the Gradient Editor,

and draw a few gradients to create subtle background below the text, so the text can become more visible and easy to read.

Step 4: Add More Text

In this step we are going to add more text to poster design. Before we start adding text, we need to make order using Photoshop guides.

If you take a look at final design you can see that there are 5 columns: 4 columns with text and 1 column with Swiss flag. So it’s time to do some math.

We added 2 Vertical guides at the beginning (15px and 785px) so the availabe space for columns is 770px. The width of each column (including gap between columns) is 154px (770px/5=154px).
I set gap between columns to 10px, this means that each column is 144px wide.

Go to View -> New Guide and set the Vertical guides at:

• 159 (end first column)
• 169 (beginning second column)
• 313 (end second column)
• 323 (beginning third column)
• 467 (end third column)
• 477 (beginning fourth column)
• 621 (end fourth column)
• 631 (beginning fifth column)

Add one more guide, Horizontal, at 893px. With this we set the distance between image and text to 15px.

We can start adding text. With Horizontal Type Tool (T) create text box,

and type text. I started with German description of Matterhorn from wikipedia.

Add short descriptions in French, Italian and English language using the method above.

Step 5: Create Swiss Flag

With Rectangle Tool (U) create red (#d52b1e) rectangle, sized at 108x108px, in empty column.

Next, with Line Tool (U), create 20px weight, vertical white (#ffffff) line.

Duplicate this layer (Cmd/Ctrl + J), go to Edit -> Transform -> Rotate 90 CW.

Step 6: Add Even More Text

Go to View -> New Guide and add one more Horizontal Guide at 1120px.
Grab Horizontal Type Tool (T), for font choose Helvetica Bold, set font size to 30px, color to #3d6989 and type Schweiz.

Using the same method type name of Swiss country in 3 more languages (French, Italian and English).

Step 7: Swissair Logo

Jump over to wikipedia (nifty resource for us designers), download 200px Swissair logo, and insert into our design.
Convert the logo layer to a Smart Object so we can perform nondestructive transforms on it. With Free Transform Tool (Cmd/Ctrl + T), scale it down a bit (make it smaller) and place it like on the picture below.

Set the logo Opacity to 75%.

And this is what we have done so far:

Step 8: Red Circle

Invoke Ellipse Tool (U), hold Cmd/Ctrl + Shift and draw red (#d25934) circle.

Change the Blend Mode to Color Burn and lower the Opacity to 70%.

Step 9: Create And Add Diagonal Lines

Create new document using 10 pixels for the width and 10 pixels for the height, with transparent background. Set the Foreground color to #02152a and with Line Tool (U) draw diagonal line.

Go to Edit -> Define Pattern. Name the new pattern the way you want it, and you will have a very cool diagonal pattern.

Back to our design, add a layer on top and fill with white. Open the Layer Style dialog window by double-clicking on the layer. Add Pattern Overlay effect, using the pattern we created.

Select “Blending Options” in Layer Style window and reduce Fill Opacity to 0%. By doing this we removed white color (fill) but pattern overlay remain visible.

With Rectangular Marquee Tool create selection around image and then go to Layer -> Layer Mask -> Reveal Selection to apply layer mask.

At this point we can stop!
We have created cool, clean, modern poster design. Click on the image to see it in full size.

In next 2 steps I will show you how to transfrom this modern, clean poster design into retro/vintage looking poster.

Step 10: Add Texture To Composition

Import awesome Grunge texture by ~darkrose42-stock into our design and place it just below red circle layer.

Change the Blend Mode to Hard Light and set Opacity to 30%.

Step 11: Final Vintage Touch Using Gradient Map

This is the last step in the tutorial. We will use an adjustment layer to give our entire composition the color theme we are going for.

First, let us go to Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Gradient Map to add an adjustment layer above all the other layers.

The Gradient Map adjustment layer alters the image by applying a gradient map to the image. Gradient map applies the gradient by using the lightness and darkness values in the image as a map for how the gradient colors are applied.

Set a gradient going from dark purple (#640270) to dark yellow (#dcb201), then lower Opacity of adjustment layer to 40% to give our design a faded vintage feel.

Research and Inspiration

From wikipedia: Annapurna (Goddess of the Harvests) is a series of peaks in the Himalayas, a 55 km (34 mi)-long massif of which the highest point, Annapurna I, stands at 8091m, making it the 10th-highest summit in the world and one of the 14 “eight-thousanders”. Annapurna I was the first 8,000-metre (26,200 ft) peak to be climbed.
The south face of Annapurna was first climbed in 1970 by Don Whillans and Dougal Haston, members of a British expedition led by Chris Bonington.

I knew from the start what style of poster I wanted to create, but to further develop my ideas I did web research in order to pick up more ideas and inspiration which would help tailor my design.

Setting Up The Document

Open up Adobe Photoshop and create a document with desired poster dimensions. Remember to use a high DPI (150-300) and CMYK Color Mode if you are planning on sending the file to press.

Step 1: The Background

Fill the background with white color (#ffffff) using Paint Bucket Tool.

Create new layer, set the Foreground color to #99dbfb and Background color to #b4e4fb. With Gradient Tool (G) fill the new layer using gradient from Foreground to Background.

Duplicate this layer by pressing Command + J on keyboard and then change the Blend Mode of duplicated layer to Multiply and lower the opacity to 50%.

Reset the Foreground and Background colors to Black and White by pressing D on keyboard. Create new layer, then go to Filter -> Render -> Clouds.

Change the Blend Mode to Screen and lower the opacity to 50%. Background is all set up.

To avoid mess, select all layers, except first white color layer, and press Command + G to group them, and name this group “Background”.

Step 2: Creating First Peak – The Highest One

Pick up Custom Shape Tool (U), from Shape menu choose triangle, set color to #3383a8, draw the highest peak and place it in the middle of the page. Name this layer “highest peak”.

Command + Click on Vector Mask Thumbnail to make a selection.

Create new layer and use Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) to create selection like on the picture below. Make sure that Intersect with selection is selected.

Fill the selection with #316378 color. Give this layer a name – “shadow”.

Now let’s create snow on the top of the mountain.

Once again, Command + Click on Vector Mask Thumbnail of “highest peak” layer to make a selection, then with Plygonal Lasso Tool (L) create selection on top, create new layer and fill selection with white color. Name this layer “snow”.

Final touch – add subtle shadow on snow. Command + Click on “shadow” layer to make a selection, with Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) create new selection, again create new layer and fill selection with light gray color #dce8ea. Give this layer name “snow shadow”.

Here is how our highest peak look now. Not bad huh?

Once again to avoid mess, select all peak layers (highest peak, shadow, snow, snow shadow) and group them into “Highest Peak” group.

Step 3: Create Next Peak

Our poster design is going to be made up of mountain peaks, and therefore we’re going to need a lot of them. Let’s add another peak to poster.

Using techiques described in Step 2 we will create next peak, but with different colors for peak and shadow. To make your work little bit easier hide “Highest Peak” group before start drawing new peak.

I used #5ca9cb color for the peak, #396f86 for the shadow, white for the snow and once again #dce8ea for snow shadow.
Again group all this layers and give it appropriate name.

Step 4: Create Even More Peaks

We now need to create more peaks. Repeat the above steps until you are happy with composition. Use different shades of blue for peaks and shadows,

keep adding …

and play with order of peaks.

At the end you should have something similar to this.

It’s time to move on.

Step 5: Smallest Peak And Climber

With Custom Shape Tool (U) create small triangle filled with #2f799b color and position it like shown below.

Create tiny shadow on this peak (I used #336c83 for the color).

Jump over to Shutterstock and download Silhouette of a mountaineer standing on the top at sunset image.

Open up the shot in a new document and clip out the mountaineer with the Pen Tool.

Paste the silhouette into the document and scale into place. Position it in the bottom right corner, so it looks like the mountaineer stands on the smallest peak. Name this layer “climber”.

Open Layer Style for this layer, open Color Overlay and set color to #2f799b (the same color that we used for smallest peak.)

Step 6: Typography

Go ahead to The League Of Moveable Type and download League Gothic font, which fits perfectly into our design.
Grab Horizontal Type Tool (T), choose League Gothic font and type the word “ANNAPURNA”. Use the following settings and place it like shown below.

With the same font type “1970″, use following settings and place it close to word “ANNAPURNA”.

Take a look at result so far.

Step 7: Making Borders With Layer Mask

This step is going to be very easy. Select all groups (background, peaks, climber …) and group them into one big group.
Using Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) make selection smaller then canvas.

With big group selected, go to Layer -> Layer Mask -> Reveal Selection.

Step 8: Adding Texture

Pick wrinkled paper backdrop texture from Shutterstock, and insert it at the top of your layers palette.
Scale it down to fit our document and desaturate (Shift + Command + U). Run a quick Sharpen (Filter -> Sharpen) command to give more definition to the texture.

Change the Blending Mode to Multiply and lower the Opacity to 60%.

Conclusion

All done! We now have a quite awesome retro poster, made entirely out of basic shapes (triangles), simple blending techniques and spiced up with some textures.

Idea and Design Process

I started with nice radial gradient for the background. Then I added new layer with stripped pattern over the background. With layer mask I hide some parts of stripped pattern. Finally I added text using Helvetica Neue font.
