class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/preview.jpg" alt="Preview" /></p></div><h3>Step 1</h3><p>Fire up Adobe Photoshop and create a document with your desired poster dimensions (I used standard A3 paper size) and fill background with white color. Remember to use a high DPI (between 150-300 dpi) and CMYK Color Mode if you are planning on sending your work to the press.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/img01.jpg" alt="Step 1" /></p></div><h3>Step 2</h3><p>To start, create new group (Layer > New > New Group), give it appropriate name like &#8220;poster&#8221;, then with Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) draw a rectangle that is a bit smaller then canvas (give it 5mm on each side). Make sure that group layer is selected and go to Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection to apply layer mask.</p><p>Download and open <a
href="http://www.sxc.hu/photo/430136">Handmade Paper</a>, Desaturate the image (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + U) to remove its colors and import into our design. Using Free Transfrom Tool (Cmd/Ctrl + T) resize image a bit and place it inside our &#8220;poster&#8221; group and set the Opacity to 40%.</p><p><div

Use image below as reference.</p><p><div

Then just set the Opacity of this layer to 40% to soften and blend the effect into its background.</p><p><div

The design process involves turning digital photos into imperfect analog photos with light leaks, dark vignettes and blurred focus, creating patterns, mixing images, textures and blend modes to achive the final design.</p><p><em>&#8220;Bella Musica&#8221;</em> poster design is directly inspired by the works of Swiss designer <a

Colour washes of warm tones, dark vignettes surrounding the shots, blurred focus and light leaks where the film has been excessively exposed, were all common problems that appeared during the processing of film.<br
/> Let&#8217;s recreate all those characteristics. Open <a
href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/13311129@N00/246815707/">Ibiza photo</a> (or any other photo of your choice) in Photoshop.</p><p><div

Because I&#8217;m only designing for screen, I&#8217;ll use an document sized at 1296x1728px, set to RGB at 72dpi. If your work will be printed, you&#8217;ll need a much higher resolution-at least 300dpi. You&#8217;ll also need to set up bleeds and margins. Set your background color to a #f9f4de.</p><p><div

If you are planning to send your work to the printing press, use a high DPI (between 150-300dpi) and CMYK Color Mode.</p><p>For this tutorial, I created a document sized at 800x1135px, RGB Color at 72dpi (for web use).</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step01-01.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>Add 2 Vertical Guides (View -> New Guide) at 15px and 785px.</p><p><div

href="http://www.sxc.hu/photo/451185">Matterhorn 1</a> photo from stock.xchng and import it onto design (use image below as refference).</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step02-01.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>Select photo and press Cmd/Ctrl + U to open the Hue/Saturation window. Check &#8220;colorize&#8221; and enter the following settings:</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step02-02.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>Add one more guide (View -> New Guide), but this time Horizontal at 878px. With Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) make selection,</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step02-03.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>then go to Layer -> Layer Mask -> Reveal Selection to apply layer mask.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step02-04.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p><div

src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step02-05.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><h3>Step 3: Add Text</h3><p>Pick up Horizontal Type Tool (T), for the font choose Helvetica, and type &#8220;MATTERHORN&#8221;.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step03-01.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>Lower the Opacity of text layer to 60%.</p><p><div

src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step03-02.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>As you can see it&#8217;s a bit hard to read the text, so we&#8217;re going to fix that.<br
/> Create new layer (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + N) below text layer,</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step03-03.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>Cmd/Ctrl + click on image layer mask to make selection (this way operation will only be applied to selection not the whole canvas),</p><p><div

class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step03-06.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><h3>Step 4: Add More Text</h3><p>In this step we are going to add more text to poster design. Before we start adding text, we need to make order using Photoshop guides.</p><p>If you take a look at final design you can see that there are 5 columns: 4 columns with text and 1 column with Swiss flag. So it&#8217;s time to do some math.</p><p>We added 2 Vertical guides at the beginning (15px and 785px) so the availabe space for columns is 770px. The width of each column (including gap between columns) is 154px (770px/5=154px).<br
/> I set gap between columns to 10px, this means that each column is 144px wide.</p><p>Go to View -> New Guide and set the Vertical guides at:</p><ul
class="list-style3"><li>159 (end first column)</li><li>169 (beginning second column)</li><li>313 (end second column)</li><li>323 (beginning third column)</li><li>467 (end third column)</li><li>477 (beginning fourth column)</li><li>621 (end fourth column)</li><li>631 (beginning fifth column)</li></ul><p><div

src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step04-01.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>Add one more guide, Horizontal, at 893px. With this we set the distance between image and text to 15px.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step04-02.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>We can start adding text. With Horizontal Type Tool (T) create text box,</p><p><div

style="color:#a5a5a5;">300% zoom</em></center></p><h3>Step 6: Add Even More Text</h3><p>Go to View -> New Guide and add one more Horizontal Guide at 1120px.<br
/> Grab Horizontal Type Tool (T), for font choose Helvetica Bold, set font size to 30px, color to #3d6989 and type Schweiz.</p><p><div

href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Swissair_logo.svg">wikipedia</a> (nifty resource for us designers), download 200px <a
href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/42/Swissair_logo.svg/200px-Swissair_logo.svg.png">Swissair logo</a>, and insert into our design.<br
/> Convert the logo layer to a Smart Object so we can perform nondestructive transforms on it. With Free Transform Tool (Cmd/Ctrl + T), scale it down a bit (make it smaller) and place it like on the picture below.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step07-01.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /><br

src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step07-02.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>And this is what we have done so far:</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step07-03.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><h3>Step 8: Red Circle</h3><p>Invoke Ellipse Tool (U), hold Cmd/Ctrl + Shift and draw red (#d25934) circle.</p><p><div
class="image"><img

src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step08-02.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><h3>Step 9: Create And Add Diagonal Lines</h3><p>Create new document using 10 pixels for the width and 10 pixels for the height, with transparent background. Set the Foreground color to #02152a and with Line Tool (U) draw diagonal line.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step09-01.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /><br
/></div><center><em
style="color:#a5a5a5;">3200% zoom</em></center></p><p>Go to Edit -> Define Pattern. Name the new pattern the way you want it, and you will have a very cool diagonal pattern.</p><p>Back to our design, add a layer on top and fill with white. Open the Layer Style dialog window by double-clicking on the layer. Add Pattern Overlay effect, using the pattern we created.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step09-02.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>Select &#8220;Blending Options&#8221; in Layer Style window and reduce Fill Opacity to 0%. By doing this we removed white color (fill) but pattern overlay remain visible.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step09-03.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>With Rectangular Marquee Tool create selection around image and then go to Layer -> Layer Mask -> Reveal Selection to apply layer mask.</p><p>At this point we can stop!<br
/> We have created cool, clean, modern poster design. Click on the image to see it in full size.</p><div

src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step10-02.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><h3>Step 11: Final Vintage Touch Using Gradient Map</h3><p>This is the last step in the tutorial. We will use an adjustment layer to give our entire composition the color theme we are going for.</p><p>First, let us go to Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Gradient Map to add an adjustment layer above all the other layers.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/step11-01.jpg" alt="Design A Vintage Style Swissair Travel Poster In Photoshop" /></p></div><p>The Gradient Map adjustment layer alters the image by applying a gradient map to the image. Gradient map applies the gradient by using the lightness and darkness values in the image as a map for how the gradient colors are applied.</p><p>Set a gradient going from dark purple (#640270) to dark yellow (#dcb201), then lower Opacity of adjustment layer to 40% to give our design a faded vintage feel.</p><p><div

class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/final.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></a></p></div><h3>Research and Inspiration</h3><p>From <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annapurna" target="_blank">wikipedia</a>: <em>Annapurna (Goddess of the Harvests) is a series of peaks in the Himalayas, a 55 km (34 mi)-long massif of which the highest point, Annapurna I, stands at 8091m, making it the 10th-highest summit in the world and one of the 14 &#8220;eight-thousanders&#8221;. Annapurna I was the first 8,000-metre (26,200 ft) peak to be climbed.<br
/> The south face of Annapurna was first climbed in 1970 by Don Whillans and Dougal Haston, members of a British expedition led by Chris Bonington.</em></p><p><div

src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/800px-Chaine-annapurna.jpg" alt="annapurna" /></p></div><p>I knew from the start what style of poster I wanted to create, but to further develop my ideas I did web research in order to pick up more ideas and inspiration which would help tailor my design.</p><p><div

class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/annapurna-book.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><h3>Setting Up The Document</h3><p>Open up Adobe Photoshop and create a document with desired poster dimensions. Remember to use a high DPI (150-300) and CMYK Color Mode if you are planning on sending the file to press.</p><h3>Step 1: The Background</h3><p>Fill the background with white color (#ffffff) using Paint Bucket Tool.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/011.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Create new layer, set the Foreground color to #99dbfb and Background color to #b4e4fb. With Gradient Tool (G) fill the new layer using gradient from Foreground to Background.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/021.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Duplicate this layer by pressing Command + J on keyboard and then change the Blend Mode of duplicated layer to Multiply and lower the opacity to 50%.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/031.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Reset the Foreground and Background colors to Black and White by pressing D on keyboard. Create new layer, then go to Filter -> Render -> Clouds.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/041.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/051.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Change the Blend Mode to Screen and lower the opacity to 50%. Background is all set up.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/061.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>To avoid mess, select all layers, except first white color layer, and press Command + G to group them, and name this group &#8220;Background&#8221;.</p><h3>Step 2: Creating First Peak &#8211; The Highest One</h3><p>Pick up Custom Shape Tool (U), from Shape menu choose triangle, set color to #3383a8, draw the highest peak and place it in the middle of the page. Name this layer &#8220;highest peak&#8221;.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/071.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/081.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Command + Click on Vector Mask Thumbnail to make a selection.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/091.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Create new layer and use Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) to create selection like on the picture below. Make sure that Intersect with selection is selected.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/101.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/111.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Fill the selection with #316378 color. Give this layer a name &#8211; &#8220;shadow&#8221;.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/121.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Now let&#8217;s create snow on the top of the mountain.</p><p>Once again, Command + Click on Vector Mask Thumbnail of &#8220;highest peak&#8221; layer to make a selection, then with Plygonal Lasso Tool (L) create selection on top, create new layer and fill selection with white color. Name this layer &#8220;snow&#8221;.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/131.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/141.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Final touch &#8211; add subtle shadow on snow. Command + Click on &#8220;shadow&#8221; layer to make a selection, with Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) create new selection, again create new layer and fill selection with light gray color #dce8ea. Give this layer name &#8220;snow shadow&#8221;.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/151.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/161.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Here is how our highest peak look now. Not bad huh?</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/171.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Once again to avoid mess, select all peak layers (highest peak, shadow, snow, snow shadow) and group them into &#8220;Highest Peak&#8221; group.</p><h3>Step 3: Create Next Peak</h3><p>Our poster design is going to be made up of mountain peaks, and therefore we’re going to need a lot of them. Let&#8217;s add another peak to poster.</p><p>Using techiques described in Step 2 we will create next peak, but with different colors for peak and shadow. To make your work little bit easier hide &#8220;Highest Peak&#8221; group before start drawing new peak.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/181.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/191.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/201.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/211.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>I used #5ca9cb color for the peak, #396f86 for the shadow, white for the snow and once again #dce8ea for snow shadow.<br
/> Again group all this layers and give it appropriate name.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/221.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><h3>Step 4: Create Even More Peaks</h3><p>We now need to create more peaks. Repeat the above steps until you are happy with composition. Use different shades of blue for peaks and shadows,</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/231.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>keep adding &#8230;</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/241.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>and play with order of peaks.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/251.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>At the end you should have something similar to this.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/261.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>It&#8217;s time to move on.</p><h3>Step 5: Smallest Peak And Climber</h3><p>With Custom Shape Tool (U) create small triangle filled with #2f799b color and position it like shown below.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/271.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Create tiny shadow on this peak (I used #336c83 for the color).</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/281.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Jump over to <a
href="http://www.shutterstock.com/" target="_blank">Shutterstock</a> and download <a
href="http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-54193555/stock-photo-silhouette-of-a-mountaineer-standing-on-the-top-at-sunset.html" target="_blank">Silhouette of a mountaineer standing on the top at sunset</a> image.</p><p>Open up the shot in a new document and clip out the mountaineer with the Pen Tool.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/291.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Paste the silhouette into the document and scale into place. Position it in the bottom right corner, so it looks like the mountaineer stands on the smallest peak. Name this layer &#8220;climber&#8221;.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/301.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Open Layer Style for this layer, open Color Overlay and set color to #2f799b (the same color that we used for smallest peak.)</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/311.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/321.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><h3>Step 6: Typography</h3><p>Go ahead to <a
href="http://www.theleagueofmoveabletype.com/" target="_blank">The League Of Moveable Type</a> and download <a
href="http://www.theleagueofmoveabletype.com/fonts/7-league-gothic" target="_blank">League Gothic</a> font, which fits perfectly into our design.<br
/> Grab Horizontal Type Tool (T), choose League Gothic font and type the word &#8220;ANNAPURNA&#8221;. Use the following settings and place it like shown below.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/331.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>With the same font type &#8220;1970&#8243;, use following settings and place it close to word &#8220;ANNAPURNA&#8221;.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/341.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Take a look at result so far.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/351.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><h3>Step 7: Making Borders With Layer Mask</h3><p>This step is going to be very easy. Select all groups (background, peaks, climber &#8230;) and group them into one big group.<br
/> Using Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) make selection smaller then canvas.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/36.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>With big group selected, go to Layer -> Layer Mask -> Reveal Selection.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/37.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/38.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><h3>Step 8: Adding Texture</h3><p>Pick <a
href="http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-44985022/stock-photo-wrinkled-paper-backdrop.html" target="_blank">wrinkled paper backdrop</a> texture from <a
href="http://www.shutterstock.com/" target="_blank">Shutterstock</a>, and insert it at the top of your layers palette.<br
/> Scale it down to fit our document and desaturate (Shift + Command + U). Run a quick Sharpen (Filter -> Sharpen) command to give more definition to the texture.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/39.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><p>Change the Blending Mode to Multiply and lower the Opacity to 60%.</p><p><div
class="image"><img
src="http://blog.webexpedition18.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/40.jpg" alt="retro poster photoshop tutorial" /></p></div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>All done! We now have a quite awesome retro poster, made entirely out of basic shapes (triangles), simple blending techniques and spiced up with some textures.<br
/> Take a look at the final result below.</p><p><a
