When it came to sex and violence in the cinema of the 1920s and early ’30s, it was about as rampant as the stuff that frequents contemporary cop shows on most major networks. As taboo as it was (which is why the Hays Code kicked in full-force in 1934), it was the first time mass audiences were publically enraptured with human desires that were both natural and terrifying. This made for some rather impulsive movie posters that sucked people in then, but look flat-out silly to a viewer of today.
